More about us: The Conservation Volunteer was first published in October 1940 by the then-Department of Conservation for the citizens of Minnesota and, in particular, a group dubbed Conservation Volunteers. Early issues asked readers to take a pledge "to support by word and deed all aspects of conservation." In 1980, due to a state budget shortfall, the DNR magazine began asking readers for financial support. Since 2003, readers' contributions have covered the entire cost of publishing. Minnesota Conservation Volunteer receives no funding from state taxes, the state lottery, or fishing, hunting, or boating license fees. The circulation, originally limited to 5,000 copies, has grown to about 145,000 subscribers making Minnesota Conservation Volunteer one of the largest circulation magazine published in Minnesota.
